It aims to:

  • Offer innovative training programs addressing non-traditional clientele responsive to the developmental needs of the community;
  • Work towards the conscientization of women and men, equitable distribution of benefits and equal access to opportunities through the use of resources in organized cooperative effort;
  • Provide a functional academic community extension program aimed at faculty-and students’ formation in the service of the community.
  • Involve the university community participating in policy decision making and program implementation in the wider community.
  • Linkage with government, business and industry in terms of serving their research and training needs and providing continuing education to bring them up to date with current trends and technology.


The office achieves these mandates through the following units:

  • Community Extension Services (CES) which works with the poorest of the poor undertaking community development projects for social transformation in Mindanao.
  • Small Business Institute (SBI) which provides technical assistance short term livelihood training, enterprises development and micro-financing program and other activities for the development of small and medium scale business in Cotabato City, Region XII and ARMM. The Small Business Institute (SBI) has also provided a venue for interaction between the business sector and relevant government agencies as well as among the various groups within the business sector in the region.
  • Skills Training Center (STC) which offers short term technical/vocational education and trainings, seminars and other trainings identified by the community and sponsoring agencies.

  1. Community Involvement and Services:

  2. These are programs aimed at empowering the community through the efforts of the students and faculty of NDU. Under these programs are the following;
    • University Extension Program (UEP)
    • Academic Community Extension Program
    • National Services Training Program (NSTP)

  3. Continuing Education

  4. This is for the professional, career and personal development of people in the community. The target client is the general public. It addresses different levels of education from cooking class for housewives to management techniques for AB or MA degree holders.

  5. Community Education

  6. A program of courses identified in the community needs assessment with the end in view of providing employment for women, unemployed and other disadvantaged members of the community.

  7. Sponsored Programs

  8. These are courses identified by cooperative, agencies, and other organizations as necessary for their business or activities. The courses are developed to meet their specific needs especially since they will be the ones to fund the program. The participants will be identified by the sponsoring agencies or will come from applicants who meet their criteria.

  9. Youth Outreach University Program (YOU-Makes a Difference)

  10. The YOU –Makes a Difference Program is a scholarship program for out-of-school youth (OSY) in Cotabato City and Maguindanao aged 12-24 years old who are interested to enroll in alternative learning and short-term programs at Notre Dame University-Skills Training Center. The program’s main objectives is to provide opportunities for out-of-school children and youth (OSCY’s) to become literate, skilled and productive workforce with positive attitudes and work habits and as value-laden individuals.


THE NOTRE DAME UNIVERSITY EXTENSION PROGRAM (NDUEP)

  1. What is it?

    • It is an institutionalized community extension program whose commitment is towards community service and development. It works towards the conscientization of men and women, equitable distribution of benefits and provision of equal access to opportunities through the optimal use of resources and human expertise in organized cooperative effort.
    • It achieves such through:
    • technical assistance in the form of functional education;
    • community organizing;
    • health programs;
    • cooperative formation,
    • capability building,
    • women in development,
    • income generating projects and
    • technical and loan assistance and
    • such other programs and activities as may be appropriate.

  2. Long-Term Goal

  3. The Notre Dame University Extension Program envisions to produce men and women who shall be the instruments in bringing about a culture of peace amidst a milieu of cultural diversities in Mindanao. A culture of peace in this context, is taken to mean as having the following characteristics/attributes:

Short-Term Goals

Specifically, the University Extension Program (UEP) aims to:
  1. Establish the structure that will ensure planning, coordination, communication, implementation, linking and monitoring of extension programs.
  2. Establish necessary support infrastructure to sustain the extension program of the university.
  3. Integrate extension into both curricular and co-curricular activities.
  4. Make the faculty, staff, administrators, and students more sensitive to and actively participate in extension as an integral part of instruction and research.
  5. Strengthen coordination and cooperation between and among sectors.
  6. Formulate clear-cut policies governing extension program among the various sectors/colleges in the University.

B. SPECIAL PROGRAMS

Special/sponsored programs are those which are contracted by institutions or groups for specific target clients. The programs are usually offered during the day or week-ends. These are programs identified by the funding agencies and other organization for their advocacy or activities. Since most of the organizations are for community service. The objectives of the special program will most likely be education, skills training, self-sufficiency, and employment for the participants.

The following are some of the programs implemented/ being implemented by the University in partnership with the different organizations:

  • BRAC
    • Education Program using Alternative Delivery Model for the school less barangays in the Province of Maguindanao (Ampatuan, Shariff Aguak, Mamasapano, Sultan Kudarat and Sultan Mastura)

  • Alternative Learning System (ALS)
    • The Alternative Learning System is a parallel learning system in the Philippines that provides a practical option to the existing formal instruction. When one does not have or cannot access formal education in schools, ALS is an alternate or substitute.

  • BEAM/CARDNO
    • Is a Technical Vocational Education/ Skills Training Program for the Out-of-School Youth (OSY) in the Province Maguindanao.

  • Mindanao Youth for Development (MYDev)
    • Is the program specifically aims to actively engage the Out-of-School Youth (OSY) in workforce and community development activities by developing their basic education competencies, livelihood capacities and leadership for civic engagement.

  • Indigenous People’s (IP) Education in partnership with PORTICUS
    • Education Program for out of school IP children in the far flung Barangays of South Upi, Maguindanao on Functional and Basic Literacy for children aged 4-9 and 10-14 yrs. old.

  • NAMFREL
  • NAMFREL is a non-partisan organization with over 250,000 member-volunteers from different religious, civic, business, professional, labor, youth, educational, and non-government organizations. Its goal is to ensure "free, orderly and honest elections" in the Philippines. Notre Dame University has been a member of NAMFREL since 1995 served as operation center/headquarter for Cotabato City, Maguindanao and Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao
